Israeli authorities released Palestinian journalist Abed Abou Shhadeh on November 8, 2026, after holding him for five days without charge, Al Jazeera reported. Shhadeh is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, and he described himself as a journalist and political activist in coverage of his case.

He was arrested in the middle of the night on Tuesday, after 15 Israeli security officers raided his home in Jaffa. He was then held at a facility run by Shin Bet, Israel's domestic intelligence agency, in Petah Tikva, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.

He was detained on suspicion of "contact with a foreign agent." The legal rights group Adalah said he was suspected of receiving money from foreign sources to support Israel's Arab voters. Shhadeh's lawyer said the suspicion relied on a public conversation Shhadeh had with Palestinian intellectual Azmi Bishara while he was in Qatar. Earlier in the week, an Israeli court extended his detention, according to Al Jazeera.

Before the accusation, Shhadeh had spoke on the al-Midan podcast for the Arab48 website and appeared as an analyst on Al Jazeera. Those appearances are part of the public record of his work, and the suspicion against him centres on a conversation rather than on those broadcasts.

After his release, Shhadeh said the detention was part of political measures intended to "intimidate Arab society as a whole." He also said he would continue his work as a journalist.
