Files from the Ocarina of Time remake suggest a Master Quest mode may be coming, and that players could need to buy downloadable content (DLC, paid add-ons) to reach it. Nintendo has not announced any DLC for the game.

The remake launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November 2026. Nintendo describes it as the Nintendo 64 classic returning for a new generation, and says the game is reborn exclusively for Switch 2. Nintendo lists the UK digital version at £49.99.

The first clues came from the game's files. Dataminer MrCheeze, who examines game data for hidden content, shared strings on Bluesky that tie the tag "MQ" to dungeons including Dodongo's Cavern. Eurogamer reports that other entries include "HasMQ", "IsMQModeExist", "NewGameMQ" and "ReleaseMQ". "MQ" is short for Master Quest, the alternative version of the game that players have been looking for since its first appearance.

Master Quest is a remixed take on Ocarina of Time, with rearranged dungeons and tougher puzzles. It first appeared as a bonus disc for the GameCube. It came back in Ocarina of Time 3D in 2011, where it unlocked after players finished the main story. That version mirrored the whole world and had enemies deal double damage.

Dataminer OatmealDome said the mode will be unlocked by owning DLC rather than arriving in a free update. OatmealDome also said the data is incomplete, so the details could still change. The same dataminer said the mode's world is mirrored and its dungeons are modified, pointing to cows in Jabu-Jabu's Belly as one example.

The remake does not include Master Quest at launch. Its files do contain these references, but no official announcement has followed. Nothing about a release date or price for any extra content has been announced.

The remake itself is a larger change than a simple port. IGN's wiki describes it as a complete remake with a new art style and new animations. Nintendo has said the original game is being given a fresh start on Switch 2, with a range of enhancements.

Until Nintendo speaks, the references are the only public evidence of a Master Quest mode in this version.
