Arsenal top the table after 10 games, but history urges caution

Arsenal are top of the Premier League after 10 games, with 27 points. The lead is real, but the record of earlier seasons is more mixed than the table suggests.
Teams get three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Brighton are second on 21, the same total as Manchester City, who sit third on goal difference. Liverpool have 18. At the foot of the table, Crystal Palace have seven points from 10 games and have lost their last four league matches, according to BBC Sport.
So what does history say about a start like Arsenal's? Only two sides before them have had exactly 27 points at this stage, and neither went on to win the title. Arsenal themselves were on that mark in 2022-23, when Manchester City pipped them to the trophy. Four teams have had more than 27 points after 10 games, and all four won the league.
The leader at this stage has won the title in 15 of the 34 Premier League seasons so far. Champions have averaged 23 points after 10 games. Clubs on 21 points or fewer have still won it 14 times, so Brighton and City have plenty of football left to play.
Second place has been a harder spot to turn into silverware. The team in second after 10 games has won the title just once in the past 18 seasons, when City did it in 2022-23. Ten games is also a long way from the end. The fewest points a side has had at this stage and still gone on to win the league is 18. The biggest gap a champion has closed from this point is six points, managed by Manchester United in 2002-03 and by City in 2013-14.
The bottom of the table tells its own story. Fourteen teams have been bottom after 10 games and still stayed up, most recently Wolves in 2024-25. Relegation means going down to the division below, and the bottom three go down each season. Of the 88 sides that had seven or fewer points at this stage, 37 avoided the drop.
Sunderland offer a useful reminder of how quickly a table can shift. They had four points after 10 games in 2013-14 and still finished 14th. This season they climbed off the bottom of the table with a win over Chelsea. Only Bolton in 2002-03 have had more than seven points at this stage and still finished bottom, so Palace's position is not yet fixed.
For fans, the early months are about shape more than destiny. A strong start builds belief and a bad run can cost confidence, but the table is still being written. Arsenal are ahead for now, and the record suggests the chase has only just begun.
