Godzilla Minus Zero Tops the Weekend Box Office With $31.6 Million

Godzilla Minus Zero, an animated film from the independent distributor GKids, topped the North American weekend box office with more than $31.6 million, according to Deadline. Final weekend figures come out on Monday.
The result is the biggest opening yet for GKids. The company's previous best was the $13 million debut of The Boy and the Heron in 2023. Before release, Boxoffice Pro projected an opening of $25 million to $35 million. The film took $14.5 million on Friday alone, as Deadline reported earlier in the week.
The weekend was crowded. Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, from Sony Pictures and Prime Focus Studios, opened to $12.2 million, including Thursday previews, across 1,433 screens. That makes it the second-biggest North American opening for an Indian film, behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which opened to $14.5 million. Drummer Boy, from Angel Studios and 2521 Entertainment, took third place with $9.3 million.
Several smaller releases also drew attention. Jimmy, a biopic of the actor Jimmy Stewart from Fathom Entertainment and Burns & Co., debuted at No. 12 with $2 million from 1,500 theatres. The first two episodes of Heated Rivalry, distributed by Regal Entertainment Distribution, opened at No. 14 with $1.4 million from 945 locations. The series first arrived on streaming nearly a year ago. Inc. reported $1 million in advance theatrical sales for it, and Regal ran the complete series in pairs of episodes at more than 275 locations from November 6 to November 30, per Boxoffice Pro.
Smaller films posted solid numbers too. A24's Club Kid earned $391,000 from just 6 screens. Amazon MGM Studios' I Play Rocky took $335,000 from 7 screens. Netflix's La Bola Negra grossed $975,000 in its fourth week in cinemas, at 473 locations, for a running total of $2.47 million. Sony Pictures Classics' The Only Living Pickpocket earned $893,000 in its second week on 818 screens, bringing its total to $3.95 million.
Some numbers are about reach rather than headline size. The Telugu film Scene, from Prime Media Pictures, opened to $1.28 million at 330 locations. Nat Geo and Disney's Everest: The Other Side made $320,000 at 515 locations, for a running total of $1.92 million. The Mosquito Bowl took $105,000 in its second week on 309 screens, bringing its total to $756,400. A live viewing of the Stray Kids RUN IT world tour, from Trafalgar Entertainment, also placed in the weekend top 10.
All figures are domestic, meaning the United States and Canada, and all are weekend estimates unless noted. "Running total" means the amount a film has earned since it opened, and "week four" means its fourth weekend in release. Next week's chart will show whether the animated film's audience holds up as the calendar moves into late November.
