Not all locations experienced surface-level smoke equally. NWS Raleigh indicated that wildfire smoke should remain aloft — meaning suspended high in the atmosphere rather than at ground level where people breathe it — through at least the following day. The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management reported hazy skies on July 16 but said no surface smoke was expected that day. NWS Mount Holly noted that smoke had arrived locally and anticipated some mixing to the surface. The Green Bay and Gaylord NWS offices both published advisory pages confirming periodic air quality impacts across the Great Lakes region, mainly for sensitive groups.
