Satellite Images Show New Impact Scars Inside Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Plant Complex

Satellite imagery from Europe's Sentinel-2 system has revealed freshly formed impact scars inside Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant complex and at a nearby support facility, according to an analysis published July 17, 2026 by Al Jazeera's open-source investigative unit Al Jazeera. The images, dated July 7 and July 12, were cross-referenced with field footage and data from US Central Command (CENTCOM) as part of a wider effort to map American strike locations across Iran between July 7 and July 15.
The Bushehr complex sits about 17 kilometers south of the city of Bushehr and spans roughly 2.5 square kilometers. It houses two reactor buildings: Bushehr-1, which is operational and is Iran's only functioning nuclear power plant, and a second reactor that remains unfinished. The Sentinel-2 images show distinct scarring within the complex's perimeter and at an adjacent support facility, though the specific structures affected have not been publicly identified.
CENTCOM stated that it struck approximately 90 military targets in Iran on July 7–8, 2026, including air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, naval assets, and military infrastructure along Iran's southern coast Al Jazeera. CENTCOM did not list Bushehr or any nuclear facility among its announced targets. The gap between the US target list and the satellite evidence of scarring inside the Bushehr complex is the central unresolved question raised by the Al Jazeera analysis.
Ehsan Jahanian, deputy governor of Bushehr province, said on July 9, 2026, that several locations across the province had been struck, including areas surrounding the nuclear plant, a military site in Choghadak, and a fishing port in the south of the province Al Jazeera. The broader context here is one of escalating military activity around Iran's nuclear infrastructure during the summer of 2026. The IAEA had already been tracking multiple reported attacks on Bushehr before the July 7–8 US strikes.
