At least 930 people have died from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 37 new deaths recorded in a single 24-hour period ending Friday, according to DRC health ministry figures reported by Al Jazeera on July 20, 2026. That daily jump is among the sharpest mortality increases since the outbreak was declared on May 15, 2026, when several deaths in Ituri province confirmed the DRC's 17th Ebola epidemic.

Confirmed cases have reached at least 2,344 as of Saturday, July 18. The health ministry also reported 724 patients in isolation and 22 new recoveries over the same 24-hour window. The case fatality ratio — the share of confirmed cases that end in death — stands at roughly 39.7 percent based on ministry figures.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the 2026 outbreak as "the third-largest Ebola outbreak on record." He pointed to a telling comparison: the 2018–2020 DRC Ebola outbreak took more than 10 months to reach 2,000 confirmed cases, while the current epidemic crossed that threshold in just two months. That trajectory places the 2026 event on a steeper curve than any recent DRC Ebola epidemic, shrinking the operational window for contact tracing, ring vaccination, and clinical case management.

The outbreak has spread across five DRC provinces, and cross-border transmission has reached neighboring Uganda, though Tedros indicated Uganda is now close to being virus-free. The spread to Uganda marks the first confirmed cross-border spillover of this outbreak and prompted rapid containment on the Ugandan side. Within the DRC, the outbreak has moved along eastern transport corridors; RFI reported on July 9 that two Ebola cases had been detected in Kisangani, the major urban center in Tshopo province, with a second verification test underway at the time.

The most alarming operational figure cited by Tedros: more than 80 percent of new Ebola cases are being detected outside known contact lists. In Ebola response, contact lists are the backbone of containment. When a case is confirmed, epidemiologists trace all direct and indirect contacts, place them under surveillance for 21 days, and isolate anyone who develops symptoms. When the majority of new cases fall outside these lists, it means transmission chains are going unidentified — the outbreak's true extent likely exceeds reported figures. Think of contact tracing like following a thread through a tangled knot: if you lose the thread, you cannot see where it leads, and new tangles form unseen.

Undetected transmission chains are the precondition for sustained community spread. They also make ring vaccination — the strategy of immunizing contacts of confirmed cases and their contacts — structurally less effective, because the contacts themselves are unknown.

The escalation is visible in the mortality data over the past three weeks. RFI, citing the DRC's Institut National de Santé Publique (INSP), reported 438 deaths and 1,406 cases on July 2. By July 6, the WHO confirmed the death toll had exceeded 500. On July 9, it reached 600. On July 20, the figure stood at 930. That is a doubling of the death toll in roughly 18 days.

On July 15, RFI published an analysis describing the outbreak as progressing faster than the response effort, two months after the 17th epidemic was declared. The Al Jazeera reporting on July 20 corroborates that assessment with ministry data showing case counts and deaths climbing in parallel.

Compounding the crisis, healthcare workers in Ituri province have begun a strike and blocked the entrance to Bunia General Hospital, protesting the non-payment of compensation since the outbreak began over two months ago. Ituri is one of the outbreak's most affected provinces. Frontline Ebola workers — including treatment center staff, burial teams, and contact tracers — operate under extreme infection risk, and compensation disputes have surfaced in prior DRC outbreaks, notably in 2018–2020 when similar work stoppages disrupted surveillance and treatment operations in North Kivu.

The DRC health ministry remains the primary source for confirmed case and death figures. The WHO provides independent epidemiological assessment and cross-border coordination. The gap between the two institutions' reporting timelines means that WHO-confirmed figures may lag behind ministry tallies — a standard discrepancy in outbreak data pipelines, but one that matters when daily increases reach the magnitude reported on July 20.

The broader context here is that the outbreak's transmission dynamics have outpaced the conventional toolkit. Ring vaccination depends on known contacts. Contact tracing depends on community trust and access. Healthcare worker strikes degrade both treatment capacity and surveillance quality. The 80-percent figure for cases outside contact lists is not a lagging indicator; it is a real-time signal that the response architecture is not capturing the transmission network. Every unlisted case is a potential new chain, and each chain multiplies the probability of further geographic spread.
