Stellantis concluded that the cost of engineering and validating that handoff, plus the limited consumer demand for the resulting feature set, did not justify the investment.

The sequence matters here. Stellantis developed a Level 3 system to production readiness, determined the business case did not close, and has now turned to an external supplier for a Level 2 solution. That is a notable pivot from in-house autonomy ambitions toward a partner-supplied ADAS stack, and it places Stellantis on a path many of its competitors have already taken. General Motors relies on Mobileye predecessor technology in some vehicles and has built its own Ultra Cruise system in-house for higher-end models. BMW, Volkswagen, and Ford all have existing Mobileye relationships. The Stellantis deal extends Mobileye's reach further into the top tier of global automakers.

But the REM network effect is compounding: each new automaker that joins adds data contributors, improving map coverage and freshness for all participants. By selecting Mobileye's cloud-enhanced Level 2 approach, Stellantis gets hands-free capability on marked and unmarked roads, REM-derived map data it does not have to build itself, and the EyeQ chip family that has been validated across millions of production vehicles. The tradeoff is that the driver must remain attentive. The system does not permit eyes-off operation.

The unanswered question is brand and model allocation. Stellantis has fourteen brands with widely varying price points and regional footprints. Where the technology debuts will signal whether the company views cloud-enhanced ADAS as a premium differentiator or a volume feature intended for broad deployment. That detail, along with pricing and rollout timeline beyond the 2027 start, remains unspecified.
