Airbus will test folding wings on a modified A321neo in the second half of 2027, the company announced at the Farnborough airshow on July 21, 2026. Sue Partridge, who leads Airbus's "Wing of Tomorrow" programme, said the manufacturer will add wing extensions of roughly four to five metres to one of its A321neo aircraft to test different wing shapes under real flight conditions. The A321neo is part of the A320 family, the bestselling aircraft line in history. Airbus will begin assembling the wing extensions at its factory in Broughton, north Wales. The testing will happen in stages: first, the extensions will be bolted directly to the airframe without hinges. A later phase will add the hinged mechanism that lets the wings actually fold.

The folding-wing idea solves a practical problem. Longer wings improve aerodynamic efficiency — how smoothly a plane moves through the air — but they can stretch beyond the width of airport gates, which are built to a standard size. Folding wingtips let a plane benefit from longer wings during flight while still fitting into normal parking spaces on the ground. Boeing has already installed folding wingtips on its 777X, a wide-body aircraft, but the technology has not yet been used on any single-aisle plane, the category that makes up most of the world's commercial fleet.

Partridge said Airbus already has a clear picture of the next generation's design. The aircraft will use large-diameter engines and wings with a gull-like upward bend, called a dihedral, for better aerodynamics. The engine choice itself is still open. Airbus is weighing a conventional geared turbofan — a jet engine where a gearbox decouples the fan from the turbine for better efficiency, housed inside a covered nacelle — against an "open fan" design with exposed blades. The open-fan concept promises fuel savings but would bring new certification and integration challenges.

The engine decision is not Airbus's alone, and the timeline for suppliers is tightening. Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç told reporters at Farnborough that the company has only two years to persuade Airbus and Boeing to choose its engines for their next-generation single-aisle aircraft. Rolls-Royce is offering its UltraFan programme, and Erginbilgiç urged the UK government under new prime minister Andy Burnham to support the effort. He noted that the new chancellor is John Healey, previously the defence secretary, implicitly signalling that Rolls-Royce sees the new government's fiscal and industrial-policy stance as relevant to the programme's future.

Airbus has said it will decide on the shape of its new aircraft by 2030. That deadline frames the 2027 flight tests as a data-gathering step rather than a final design decision. The wing-extension flights will feed into a broader architecture study that must converge within roughly three and a half years.

The broader context here spans competition and the industrial supply chain. Single-aisle aircraft are the backbone of global aviation, and whatever replaces the A320 and Boeing 737 families will lock in engine, wing, and airframe choices for decades. Airbus's move to test folding wings on the A321neo signals that the company is treating airport-gate dimensions as a fixed constraint to be engineered into the design, not something to solve by changing infrastructure. Boeing's folding wingtips on the 777X exist only on wide-body planes, leaving the single-aisle application unproven at scale. Whoever validates it first gains performance data and certification experience that could set expectations for future narrow-body designs.

On the propulsion side, Erginbilgiç's two-year window reflects a real deadline. Engine development cycles run well ahead of when an aircraft actually enters service, so Airbus and Boeing will need to commit to an engine architecture with enough lead time for testing and certification. Rolls-Royce's push for government backing of UltraFan suggests the company sees public co-investment as necessary to compete with CFM International and Pratt & Whitney, the incumbents in today's single-aisle market. The political dimension adds another variable that is not yet settled.
