Aston Villa have qualified for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League — Europe's top club competition — and then promptly sold three of the players who got them there.

Villa finished fourth in the Premier League last season, securing a return to the Champions League for the second time in three years under manager Unai Emery, who took over a squad languishing in 14th place, three points above the relegation zone, back in November 2022. In May, they also won the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul. Two of the players who scored in that final — Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans — are now gone. Lucas Digne, the third member of that departed trio, is poised to leave as well.

The reason is money. UEFA's Squad Cost Ratio rule limits clubs to spending 70% of their revenue on transfers, wages, and agent fees. To stay within that threshold, Villa have had to sell.

Rogers, who featured for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and helped them reach the semi-finals, was sold to Chelsea for £117 million in a deal finalized on July 21. The BBC reports that selling Rogers was the easiest way for the club to comply with UEFA's financial regulations. Tielemans, who had two years left on his Villa contract, went to Manchester United after they triggered his £35 million release clause on July 14. Villa could not afford to renegotiate his deal; because he joined on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, the sale represents pure profit on the books.

Between Rogers, Tielemans, and Digne, Villa have lost 489 Premier League appearances from their squad. That is not a tweak. That is a significant portion of the spine of the team.

More departures may follow. Hull City are interested in signing Leon Bailey, potentially on an initial loan. Evann Guessand has been permitted to leave. One player staying put is Tammy Abraham, who is happy at Villa and not looking to move on.

Last summer, Villa sold Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for £40 million to meet financial rules. The pattern is clear: the club is being forced to trade quality for compliance, season after season.

Tielemans posted a farewell message to Villa fans on Instagram on July 15, reflecting on three years at the club. Rogers, voted Villa's Player of the Month for December 2025 and a standout during the World Cup, leaves as the summer window's headline deal. For supporters, the strange reality is that the best season in a generation — a European trophy and a top-four finish — has been followed by the dismantling of the team that delivered it.

Villa begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign against Brighton. Their season tickets include four home Champions League league-phase fixtures. The European nights are coming back to Villa Park. The question is who will be there to play in them.
