Aberdeen supporters will be able to buy a pint at Pittodrie from the first league match of the season, after the club secured a permanent alcohol licence for the stadium. The new arrangements take effect when Aberdeen host Heart of Midlothian on 1 August (BBC Sport).

Aberdeen City Council granted the licence, which allows alcohol to be sold at matches the authorities classify as "lower risk non-category CIR" fixtures — a designation used in Scotland to identify games with a higher potential for crowd disorder. High-risk matches will not have alcohol available.

Sales are confined to the Richard Donald Stand Lower concourse area, according to the club's own match-day guidance published earlier this year (Aberdeen FC). Supporters who want a drink must bring proof of age along with their match ticket and present both on arrival.

The club's chief executive, Alan Burrows, said Aberdeen were "pleased" with the permanent licence and pointed to earlier trial runs at Pittodrie that drew positive feedback from fans about the match-day experience (BBC Sport). Those trials included a Sunday fixture against Kilmarnock last December, part of a pilot programme that paved the way for the full licence (Press and Journal).

For fans, this means the concourse becomes something closer to what match-goers in other parts of Britain already take for granted: a place to grab a drink before kick-off, without the scramble to find a nearby pub. Scotland's football grounds have long operated under tighter alcohol restrictions than stadiums in England, a legacy of drink-related crowd trouble in the 1980s. Aberdeen's permanent licence is a step away from that legacy.

Whether the model spreads to other Scottish Premiership clubs may depend on how smoothly the opening weeks run. For now, the signal is straightforward: at Pittodrie, the bars are open for the season ahead.
