Arsenal are set to make a £70m offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, with talks believed to have accelerated in recent days, according to BBC Sport.

The 28-year-old Brazil international is described as a priority target for Arsenal and is keen on the move. Newcastle are aware of their captain's preference to join the London club. Guimaraes asked to leave Newcastle earlier this month, as first reported by BBC Sport on 15 July, and The Athletic has since published detailed reporting on his wish to join Arsenal specifically.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on 9 July that Arsenal had made a formal approach and were preparing a new bid for the midfielder as a top priority. Now, two weeks later, those discussions appear to be moving toward a concrete offer.

There is a complication, and it is one Arsenal have shown before. The club operate with a hardline maximum valuation for any player and are unwilling to overpay. They have already demonstrated that discipline this summer: Arsenal were interested in Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers but refused to go above £80m. Chelsea stepped in, Rogers moved for £117m, and Arsenal walked away despite being given the chance to match the offer. The question now is whether Newcastle will accept something close to £70m — or whether Arsenal's ceiling forces another standoff.

Guimaraes is not a cheap player to lose, either. He arrived at Newcastle in January 2022 for around €42.5m from Lyon, a deal so hurried that his medical took place in Ecuador while he was on international duty. He has since become the heartbeat of Eddie Howe's midfield and was handed the captain's armband. A hamstring injury kept him out for two months last season, but he was nearing a comeback by mid-April and went on to feature for Brazil at the World Cup, where Reuters described him as the team's "creator in chief."

Arsenal's interest is not new in the wider market, either. Reuters reported in March that Manchester United were in advanced talks for Guimaraes at around €80m, and by June, the same outlet noted that Real Madrid, United, and Arsenal had all been linked with the player. Arsenal now appear to have moved to the front of that queue.

Beyond Guimaraes, Arsenal's summer extends across several positions. Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is their first-choice defensive target, and the club have enquired about his availability. Como's Jacobo Ramon is also on the defensive list, though clauses in his contract complicate any deal. In attack, Atlético Madrid's Julian Alvarez is the dream signing — but his desire to join Barcelona and a fee potentially exceeding £125m make that prospect difficult. Arsenal have also explored a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.

For Newcastle, losing a captain and talisman midway through the window is a bitter prospect. For Arsenal, landing Guimaraes would address a clear need for midfield control and give Mikel Arteta a player who can dictate tempo and break lines — in other words, a midfielder who runs the game from the middle of the pitch. Whether the £70m offer meets Newcastle's asking price, and whether Arsenal bend their own valuation rules, will shape the final weeks of this window.
