Lani Pallister broke four minutes and broke the ice for Australia, winning the first swimming gold of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on 24 July.

The 400m freestyle was the opening final on the pool programme, and Pallister delivered a time of 3:59.56 — the only swimmer in the field to dip under four minutes. New Zealand's Erika Fairweather took silver in 4:02.65, more than three seconds back. Australia's Jenna Forrester claimed bronze in 4:05.25 The Guardian.

Pallister's personal best sits at 3:58.87, and the Commonwealth Games record remains 3:58.06, set by Ariarne Titmus at Birmingham 2022. She did not threaten either mark in Glasgow, but she did not need to. The race was hers from the midway turn.

The win carried extra weight given what Pallister, 24, has come through. In 2021 she underwent heart surgery and dealt with an eating disorder. A COVID-19 infection disrupted her Paris 2024 campaign, where she had qualified for three distance freestyle events but could only race the 800m. Glasgow offered a cleaner stage, and she used it.

Swimming runs in her bloodline. Her mother, Janelle Elford, won three Commonwealth Games medals. Her godmother is Dawn Fraser, the Australian icon. Elford was on a plane back from altitude training in Sierra Nevada with the national open water squad when her daughter touched the wall The Guardian.

Pallister was not the only Australian celebrating. The team won six golds on day one.

Jenna Forrester backed up her 400m bronze with gold in the 200m backstroke, a stunning turn given she only made the team after Kaylee McKeown withdrew with glandular fever. Forrester had finished fourth at the Australian trials in June. In the final she sat fifth at halfway, fourth at the last turn, then stormed home to win The Guardian.

Mollie O'Callaghan spearheaded the women's 4x100m freestyle relay to gold in 3:31.40, with England taking silver and South Africa bronze Glasgow 2026. For Pallister, the 400m may be the beginning rather than the headline. She is also entered in the 800m, 1500m, 200m and the 4x200m relay in Glasgow — a programme that Glasgow 2026 has expanded to its largest-ever size, adding the women's 1500m and men's 800m to the Games for the first time Glasgow 2026.
