Taylor Farms Sought White House Help to Delay Recall Amid Cyclospora Outbreak

Taylor Farms, one of the largest fresh-cut produce suppliers in North America, contacted the Trump White House in an effort to delay a recall announcement tied to a major cyclospora outbreak, according to a Wall Street Journal report published July 25, 2026 (WSJ). The call came amid an escalating multi-state outbreak of cyclosporiasis — an intestinal illness caused by the cyclospora parasite — linked to iceberg lettuce from the company's Mexican subsidiary, Taylor Farms de Mexico, based in Guanajuato.
The outbreak has grown substantially since the CDC first flagged it. As of the CDC's July 24 media release, the case count had reached 1,947 across an expanded set of states (CDC). The CDC expanded its investigation to four additional states that same day, bringing the outbreak to at least nine states (FDA). The CDC, however, continues to identify the outbreak as linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico based on epidemiologic and traceback evidence, which does not depend on a confirmed positive laboratory sample from the product itself.
Three threads converge here: a foodborne illness outbreak affecting nearly 2,000 confirmed cases across at least nine states; a regulatory agency reversing a key laboratory finding mid-investigation; and a major food supplier calling the White House to delay a public recall announcement. Each is significant on its own. Their overlap raises questions about how food safety communication is managed when scientific certainty is still evolving and when commercial pressure is directed at the political apparatus rather than the regulatory one.
The FDA's false positive retraction is, on its face, a correction that should have narrowed the investigation. It did not.
