Five of the six Scottish Premiership teams involved in European competition this August have postponed their league matches scheduled for Saturday 22 August 2025, clearing the decks for the continent's qualifying play-offs.

Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Motherwell and Hibernian all exercised their right to push back their domestic fixtures, which will now be played in midweek on either 8–9 or 15–16 September (BBC Sport). The Champions League, Europa League and Conference League play-offs — the ties that decide who reaches the group stage of each competition — are spread across two legs on either side of that weekend.

The only round-3 fixture left standing is the Dundee derby, Dundee United v Dundee, which was set for a 5:45pm kick-off live on Premier Sports (SPFL). St Johnstone v Celtic and Rangers v St Mirren are among the matches moved (The Scotsman). Falkirk v Hearts was also listed as subject to postponement if Hearts reached the play-off stage (SPFL).

The reason all five could act unilaterally traces back to a rule change in April 2025. Previously, both clubs had to agree before a league match could be called off. Now a side playing in Europe can postpone on its own (BBC Sport).

Where each club stands tells a story of its own. Celtic and Rangers are both already guaranteed a place in the play-off round, though neither knows their opponents yet. Celtic, who were beaten by Kazakh side Kairat Almaty at this stage last season, will discover their Champions League play-off rival in due course. Rangers face Polish side Jagiellonia Bialystok in the third qualifying round of the Europa League and do not yet know which European competition they will be in for the play-offs — a two-legged tie, home and away, that will settle it (BBC Sport).

Hearts have the steepest climb. They trail 4-0 on aggregate — the combined score across both legs — to Austrian side Sturm Graz in Champions League second-round qualifying. Turning that around would require one of the great Scottish European comebacks.

Motherwell and Hibernian's league matches will only be postponed if they reach the Conference League play-offs. Motherwell are well placed, 2-0 up on aggregate against Faroese side HB. Hibernian have it all to do after losing the first leg 2-0 to Kosovan side Malisheva (BBC Sport).

For fans, the upshot is a peculiar weekend: a Premiership card stripped back to a single fixture, while five clubs chase European progress that could shape their entire season's finances and prestige. The reshuffled midweek slots in September will bring their own congestion, but for now, the continent takes priority.
