John Cena Drives Matchbox: The Movie to Apple TV+ — First Trailer Drops at Comic-Con

John Cena is heading back to small-screen action. The first trailer for Matchbox: The Movie, a live-action Mattel film based on the toy cars that have rolled off production lines since 1953, debuted on Saturday in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, presented by Apple TV and Mattel (Deadline).

The film premieres October 9 on Apple TV+.

Cena plays Sean, an undercover CIA agent and former leader of a group of lifelong friends whose lives are upended when he returns to their small town and unwittingly drags them into a globe-spanning chase to save the world. Jessica Biel co-stars. The ensemble also includes Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp.

Sam Hargrave directs, with a script by David Coggeshall. Hargrave's credits include Extraction, the Netflix action franchise built around Chris Hemsworth — a signal of the practical-stunt, high-velocity register Apple TV+ is banking on here. Producers include David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Robbie Brenner, Ynon Kreiz, and Jules Daly. Hargrave also serves as executive producer alongside Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin.

The Saturday panel at Comic-Con's Hall H — the convention's largest venue, where studios traditionally unveil their biggest genre plays — was flagged in advance as a Cena appearance by the San Diego Union-Tribune (Source). Mattel's own corporate newsroom had previously confirmed the live-action feature and released first-look images alongside the premiere-date announcement (Mattel).

For Mattel, Matchbox extends a strategy that began with Barbie — turning toy IP into feature films with major talent attached. The Matchbox line predates its rival Hot Wheels by several years; the two brands have been separate properties under the Mattel umbrella since the company acquired Matchbox in 1997. Where Hot Wheels has its own film in development, Matchbox reaches screens first.

The October 9 premiere slots the film into the autumn streaming corridor, away from the summer blockbuster crush and onto Apple's platform rather than a theatrical rollout. Apple TV+ — Apple's subscription streaming service, available in over 100 countries — has built a slate of star-driven action and comedy originals alongside its prestige drama catalogue.

For fans, the Comic-Con footage offers the first real look at how a die-cast toy car line becomes a live-action spy caper. The full trailer is now circulating online following the Hall H presentation.
