Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has declared Chelsea's pursuit of captain Granit Xhaka "closed," ruling out any summer sale after the London club's £8m bid was rejected The Guardian.

Le Bris delivered the verdict after Sunderland's pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Nashville, a 4-2 defeat on July 25. His message was unambiguous: Xhaka stays.

The connection behind Chelsea's interest is easy to trace. Xabi Alonso, appointed Chelsea manager this summer, previously managed Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen. The 33-year-old midfielder clearly left an impression. But Sunderland have no intention of letting their captain follow his old boss to Stamford Bridge.

Xhaka was instrumental in Sunderland qualifying for the Europa League — the continent's second-tier club competition, sitting just below the Champions League — in the 2025-26 Premier League season. He featured in 34 league matches and was shortlisted for a Premier League transfer award Sunderland AFC.
