Meghan Markle's MasterChef Australia Guest Spot Draws 1.2 Million Viewers — and a Surprise Call from Prince Harry

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, appeared as a guest judge on episode 56 of MasterChef Australia Season 18 on Channel 10, drawing roughly 1.2 million overnight viewers — the cooking competition's biggest Sunday-night audience in three years, according to Australian media reports citing OzTAM data WWD.

The episode also pulled in the show's largest-ever overnight streaming audience of 118,000. The taping was recorded during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's private four-day tour of Australia in April, and Prince Harry made a surprise appearance — dialling in through Meghan's phone mid-episode WWD.

The permanent judges for the episode were Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli, the French chef making his television debut as a MasterChef judge. In episode 56, Markle brought some of her favourite seasonal produce for the contestants' cooking challenge. She also appears in episode 57, in which Poh Ling Yeow recreated three of her Malaysian snacks 10Play. The show's stars described Markle as "kind, interested, intelligent and knowledgeable" and "a fantastic guest judge" Who.

On screen, Markle wore a black blouse from Matteau, a black skirt from Camilla and Marc, and black Manolo Blahnik pumps. She had listed the outfit details on her page at One-Off, a Los Angeles-based creator-led fashion discovery platform she had joined as both participant and investor just before the April trip. The page lets users shop the looks she wears. One-Off co-founder and CEO Emir Talu said the platform surpassed one million views of outfits in the first three days after Markle launched her page WWD.

The fashion ripple extended well beyond her own wardrobe. At least 16 local Australian brands appeared in her tour wardrobe, including Karen Gee, Scanlan Theodore, St Agni, P Johnson, Beare Park, Paspaley, Friends With Frank, and Rolla's Jeans. Markle's publicist told WWD in April that more than two dozen Australian products had sold out as a result of the tour WWD.

The commercial scale of that attention is measurable. The Sussexes' Australia tour generated a total of $51.6 million in media impact value — a metric that assigns a dollar figure to editorial and social-media exposure — between 14 and 17 April, according to Launchmetrics data supplied to WWD. Launchmetrics chief marketing officer Alison Bringé put it plainly: "When Meghan wears a brand, the data follows" WWD.

For a cooking show, a royal guest judge with a phone call from a prince is already a strong ratings play. For the Australian brands she wore, the same appearance translated into sold-out stock and millions in measured media value — a reminder that a television guest spot and a fashion-business moment can be the same broadcast.
