Burberry and the V&A Open a Free Exhibition on the Trench Coat

Burberry, the British luxury house founded in 1856, will mount a free display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London dedicated to a single garment: the trench coat. "The Burberry Trench: Crafting an Icon" runs from 21 September 2025 to 3 January 2026 in the Prince Consort Gallery at V&A South Kensington, the museum announced on 28 July 2026 (WWD).

The opening date is no accident. Burberry presents its spring 2027 collection during London Fashion Week on the same day, 21 September — the runway show and the museum display landing on the same calendar slot as the house marks its 170th anniversary (WWD).

The exhibition is split into three chapters. "Invention" traces Thomas Burberry's development of cotton gabardine in 1879 — a breathable, water-resistant fabric that became the foundation of the brand's outerwear. "Craft" zeroes in on the hand-finished details that define the coat: the collar, the house-check lining, the storm flap and the detachable throat latch. "Creativity" pulls 19 runway looks from the past 25 years, including designs by Daniel Lee, Burberry's current creative director, and Christopher Bailey, who held the role from 2001 to 2018 (WWD).

Among the pieces going on public view for the first time is a trench coat worn by Hardy Amies, the Savile Row tailor who also dressed Queen Elizabeth II. The display draws on rare material from both the Burberry archive and the V&A's own collection — the museum holds 39 works related to Burberry, made between 1908 and 2014 — including early 20th-century catalogues (WWD).

Oriole Cullen, senior curator of fashion and textiles at the V&A, and Carly Eck, brand curator at Burberry, organised the display together (WWD).

The exhibition sits inside a longer partnership. Burberry has pledged to refurbish the V&A's Fashion Gallery, which last had a structural redevelopment in 1962. The renovated space will be renamed The Burberry Gallery and is expected to open in autumn 2028 (WWD).

For Burberry, the display is also a brand-strategy move the company has flagged to investors. In its FY26 preliminary results presentation, published 14 May 2026, Burberry described the V&A collaboration as a "juxtaposition of heritage and innovation across all consumer touchpoints," and on the earnings call called it "a dedicated activation this Autumn that charts the evolution of our trench coat" (Burberry FY26 Results Presentation; Burberry FY26 Earnings Call Transcript).

The anniversary campaign began earlier in 2025 with "The Trench, Portraits of an Icon," a marketing push that preceded the museum collaboration. Together, the campaign and the V&A display frame the trench coat as both a product and a piece of design history — a garment a soldier wore in the field, a model wore on a catwalk, and a tailor like Hardy Amies wore on Savile Row (WWD).

Admission is free.
