Eva Mendes Has the Perfect Full-Circle Reaction to Ryan Gosling's Ghost Rider Casting

Ryan Gosling is Marvel's new Ghost Rider, and his wife Eva Mendes responded with a callback that spans two films and nearly two decades.

Marvel Studios announced the casting on 26 July 2026 during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, with Gosling appearing on stage (Marvel). Reuters confirmed the reveal same-day, and the Associated Press independently verified that Gosling is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the flame-skulled motorcycle rider (AP). Shawn Levy is directing the film, which Marvel's official site lists for a 2028 release (The Hollywood Reporter).

The bit that got the internet talking came the following Sunday, when Mendes took to Instagram. She reposted a fan-edited video of the opening scene from The Place Beyond the Pines — the 2012 crime drama where she and Gosling first met — with the caption "Gracias @cinema.encyclopedia for this beautiful parallel universe connection" (The Hollywood Reporter). In a second post she shared another clip from the same film, signing off as "Roxy" — the character she played in the 2007 Ghost Rider movie opposite Nicolas Cage's Johnny Blaze (The Hollywood Reporter).

That is the circle. Mendes appeared in the first Ghost Rider film nineteen years ago. Now her partner is taking over the role.

For fans, the connection needs no explaining. Mendes played Roxanne Simpson, the love interest in the 2007 Sony-distributed adaptation starring Cage. Marvel Studios now holds the character, and Gosling steps into the flaming skull for the MCU version. Mendes and Gosling have been together since The Place Beyond the Pines wrapped in 2012 and share two daughters. Mendes stepped away from acting more than a decade ago to focus on raising them (The Hollywood Reporter).

The casting was one of several major announcements from Marvel's Comic-Con panel, which also included news on Black Panther 3 (Reuters). Gosling's name had circulated among fans as a wish-list pick for the character, but the Hall H confirmation — with the actor live on stage — made it official.

Mendes has not indicated whether she has any involvement in the new film. Her posts read as a personal nod, not a press release. But the Roxy signature landed. Just Jared called the reaction "the perfect full-circle" moment on 27 July (Just Jared), and iHeartRadio's On Air with Ryan described it as a "sweet tribute" the same day (iHeartRadio).

Ghost Rider is dated for 2028. Levy, whose recent credits include Deadpool & Wolverine, directs.
