Chelsea are finalising a deal for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and pursuing Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, as owner Behdad Eghbali signals a shift toward adding seasoned players to one of the Premier League's youngest squads.

The Athletic reported on 28 July 2026 that Chelsea are leading contenders to sign Henderson, the 36-year-old midfielder currently at Brentford, and that a deal for Lacroix is being finalised. Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano used his trademark "Here We Go" phrase on TikTok for the Lacroix move, his signature signal that a transfer is close to completion.

Sky Sports, reporting on 27 July, said Chelsea are interested in Henderson and have held positive talks with 35-year-old Welbeck, the Brighton forward. BBC Sport corroborated both pursuits the same day, noting that Henderson has one year left on his Brentford contract. Romano also confirmed via TikTok that Chelsea are working to sign both Henderson and Welbeck.

BBC Sport previously reported Chelsea's expected £52m move for Lacroix, the 26-year-old French centre-back, as well as the club's interest in Welbeck. That article carried no mention of Henderson, whose links to Stamford Bridge emerged through Sky Sports and The Athletic.

The thread connecting all three targets is experience. Eghbali told BBC Sport that Chelsea would "tweak" their model and add experience to a young core that includes Cole Palmer, Moises Caicedo, and Levi Colwill — players who have formed the backbone of Chelsea's team but are all 24 or younger. Henderson, with over 80 England caps and a Champions League winner's medal from his Liverpool years, and Welbeck, a veteran of two World Cups, would bring the kind of know-how the squad currently lacks.

Nicolas Jackson is open to leaving Chelsea, according to BBC Sport. The 24-year-old striker's potential departure could create further room for incoming forwards, with Welbeck one possible addition — a forward who has reinvented himself at Brighton as a reliable, intelligent presence rather than the explosive talent he was billed as at Manchester United.

The Lacroix deal is the furthest along. The £52m fee would bring a defender entering his peak years to a back line that has lacked consistency. Crystal Palace signed Lacroix from Wolfsburg in 2024; he has since established himself as a composed, athletic presence in the Premier League.

For Chelsea fans, this window is starting to read like a response to the question that has hovered over the club's project since the new ownership took charge: can a team built almost entirely on potential actually compete? Adding Henderson and Welbeck — not as stars, but as professionals who have been through the battles that decide seasons — suggests Chelsea's decision-makers believe the answer needed some reinforcement.
