Champions Northampton Saints will launch the 2026-27 Premiership Rugby season at home to Newcastle Red Bulls on Friday, 25 September, with the campaign set to conclude at Twickenham on 19 June 2027.

Saints lifted the title in June 2025 — their second in three seasons — after beating Exeter Chiefs in the final. They will raise the curtain on the new term at Franklin's Gardens, with the opening fixture listed for an 11:45 AM kick-off (Premiership Rugby). The Premiership is England's top tier of professional rugby union, the 15-a-side code where teams contest possession through scrums, lineouts and rucks (the battle for the ball on the ground after a tackle).

The opening weekend spreads six fixtures across three days. Harlequins host Bath on Friday night alongside the Saints match. Saturday brings Exeter Chiefs against Gloucester at Sandy Park and Sale against Bristol in the evening. Sunday features a single fixture: Leicester against Saracens (BBC Sport).

The season's shape has been set around the international calendar. Premiership matches will pause for four weeks through November to accommodate the autumn fixtures of the Nations Championship — the annual Test competition between Europe's top-tier nations and their Southern Hemisphere counterparts. A longer break of 10 weeks follows in February and March for the Six Nations, Europe's premier international tournament.

The 2026-27 final is scheduled for Saturday, 19 June 2027 at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham — English rugby's 82,000-seat national ground in south-west London.

What gives this season a different feel is the structural change now baked into the competition. Promotion and relegation were officially scrapped as part of changes voted through in February 2025, moving the Premiership towards a franchise-style model where the participating clubs hold their places from year to year rather than fighting to stay up. No club has been relegated from the Premiership or promoted from the Championship (the second tier) since Saracens went down in 2020 and returned the following year. That arrangement is now permanent.

For fans, that means the stakes shift. Without the threat of dropping out of the top flight, the focus narrows to reaching the play-offs and lifting the trophy at Twickenham. For the clubs lower down the table, a bad run no longer carries the existential dread of relegation — though critics of the franchise model argue it removes the jeopardy that has long given the league its edge. The trade-off, according to those who backed the change, is financial stability in a sport that has weathered several club collapses in recent years.

Either way, the road begins again on 25 September at Franklin's Gardens.
