Smashing Pumpkins will headline Lollapalooza on July 31, 2026, on the Bud Light stage at Grant Park in Chicago — their first headline slot at the festival in 32 years, according to Billboard.

The band last played Lollapalooza in 1994, sharing the bill with Beastie Boys, George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, The Breeders, A Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, L7, and Green Day. Lollapalooza has been held on Chicago's lakefront since 2005.

To mark the return, the band is organising "Pumpkinpalooza," a multiday celebration across the city. It kicks off with a sold-out underplay show — a small-venue gig by an artist who could fill a larger room — at the 2,500-capacity Riviera Theatre in Chicago's Uptown neighbourhood on Wednesday, July 29.

A merch pop-up will run Wednesday through Friday, July 29–31, at 900 S. Wabash Ave., open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Madame Zuzu's Celestial Lounge, a roving version of the Highland Park teahouse owned by frontman Billy Corgan and his wife Chloé Mendel, will operate all festival weekend, offering matcha, vinyl, exclusive merchandise and other specials. Chicago cocktail lounge the Aviary is getting in on the theme too, serving a limited-edition "Infinite Mellons" cocktail made with shochu, litchi blossom, honeydew melon and cantaloupe.

Corgan, a Chicago native, framed the events as a homecoming. "As a Chicagoan, born and raised, I take great pride in contributing to our city's immense and colorful cultural fabric," he said in a statement reported by Billboard.

At Lollapalooza itself, the Pumpkins will play a 90-minute set at the far north end of Grant Park on Friday, July 31. Charli xcx performs around the same time on the T-Mobile stage more than a mile south — a scheduling overlap that forces attendees to choose between two headliners in different corners of the park. Other acts on the Friday bill include Major Lazer, Lil Uzi Vert, Yungblud, Zara Larsson, Suki Waterhouse and Freddie Gibbs.

The Lollapalooza headline is the launchpad for a bigger run. Starting September 30 at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, the band embarks on "The Rats in the Cage" tour. Each night will feature two sets: one celebrating the 30th anniversary of 1995's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness — an album certified Diamond by the RIAA, meaning ten million units shipped in the US — and a second career-spanning set of hits, deep cuts and fan favourites.

For fans, the week offers a rare spread: a theatre show, a festival headline, a themed cocktail, a teahouse pop-up and an autumn tour built around a record that is itself turning 30. The band has not headlined Lollapalooza since the year Mellon Collie came out. Now both milestones land in the same window.
