Xabi Alonso's Chelsea Debut Was a Ten-Goal Thriller — and a Glimpse of the Striker Puzzle He Must Solve

Xabi Alonso's first match as Chelsea manager ended with a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at Sydney's Accor Stadium — a pre-season friendly that managed to be both entertaining and revealing about the squad Alonso has inherited. BBC Sport

Chelsea were officially announced as Alonso's new club on 17 May 2026, having endured a disappointing 2025-26 season that prompted the club to seek fresh leadership. Chelsea FC Pre-season training began at the club's Cobham base earlier in July, with captain Reece James among those who had already spoken with the new boss about what lay ahead. Chelsea FC This Australian tour match was the first chance to see Alonso's ideas in competitive action.

The opener came after just six minutes. Dastan Satpaev, a 17-year-old forward from Kazakhstan, scored Chelsea's first goal of the Alonso era — and did so as a triallist, because his transfer from FC Kairat cannot be formally completed until 12 August. BBC Sport A teenager on trial scoring the first goal of a new manager's reign is the kind of detail that pre-season exists to throw up.

Then came the performance of the night. Joao Pedro, a Brazilian striker who had been left out of Brazil's World Cup squad, came on as a substitute and scored a hat-trick inside nine minutes. BBC Sport Alonso described him afterwards as "very, very hungry" and "determined to have a great season" — and on this evidence, that is no routine manager-speak. A player omitted from international duty has something to prove, and nine minutes to score three goals is a brisk way of proving it.

Not every striker at Alonso's disposal had a night to remember. Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich for £30m the previous summer, struggled and could now be sold by the club. BBC Sport Chelsea are also without the injured Emmanuel Emegha and Nicolas Jackson, leaving Alonso short on proven, fit options through the middle.

The response is already in motion. Chelsea are advancing talks to sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the former England forward having agreed personal terms. BBC Sport The club is also in discussions to bring in 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford. Both moves are intended to add experience and leadership after last season's underwhelming campaign. BBC Sport

Alonso has also added 23-year-old Morgan Rogers to the squad, describing the signing as one he was "delighted" to complete. Japan Times Young defender Jorrel Hato has been involved in training sessions at Cobham under the new regime. Chelsea FC

For Chelsea supporters, this was less a coherent 90 minutes than a collection of clues about what the Alonso era will look like — a teenager from Kazakhstan opening the scoring, a Brazilian with a point to make scoring three in nine minutes, and a £30m forward whose future may be elsewhere. The tour continues with matches against Tottenham on 1 August and Juventus before Chelsea return to face Real Sociedad on 15 August. Chelsea FC

Ten goals in one friendly tells you very little about tactics. Four strikers with four different stories tells you a lot about the work Alonso has on his hands.
