Focus Features Lands Andrew Scott Drama 'Elsinore' for November Release

Focus Features has acquired North American and Latin American distribution rights to Elsinore, a Studiocanal production starring Andrew Scott, with a limited theatrical launch set for 20 November 2026 (Deadline).
The film will expand its release over the US Thanksgiving weekend — the holiday corridor running late November — and continue widening throughout December. A fall festival premiere is also part of the strategy, according to Variety, positioning Elsinore on the awards-season trail before it reaches general audiences.
Scott leads an ensemble that reads like a who's-who of British acting talent: Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Monica Dolan, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Georgie Glen, Sadie Soverall, Adeel Akhtar, Dickie Beau, Juliet Stevenson, and Peter Mullan. Simon Stone directs from a screenplay by Stephen Beresford. The film is produced by Studiocanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red, and Magnolia Mae Films (Deadline).
Elsinore tells the true story of Ian Charleson, a Scottish actor who delivered a celebrated performance at London's National Theatre while facing his own mortality. Charleson died in 1990 at the age of 40. The film takes its name from the fictional castle in Shakespeare's Hamlet, the play in which Charleson gave his final stage performance (Deadline; The Hollywood Reporter).
For Scott, Elsinore carries an additional first: it marks his debut as a film producer. The Irish actor, whose recent screen work includes All of Us Strangers and the BAFTA-winning series Ripley, steps behind the camera for the first time on a feature credit (The Hollywood Reporter).
Studiocanal retains distribution across its home territories — the UK, France, Italy (via Lucky Red), Germany, Poland, Benelux, Australia, and New Zealand. Focus Features takes the rest of the Americas. Deadline, which first reported the acquisition, broke the story on 28 July 2026.
The release plan follows a familiar awards-contender pattern: open limited in key cities to build reviews and word of mouth, then widen as nominations and year-end lists start to land. Thanksgiving weekend, when American audiences stream into cinemas, is prime expansion territory for a film looking to convert festival buzz into commercial traction.
Elsinore has not yet announced which fall festival it will premiere at. The major autumn showcases — Telluride, Toronto, Venice, and the BFI London Film Festival — all fall within the September-to-October window that feeds directly into the awards conversation.
