Secretly Distribution Promotes Kristian Downs to Executive Director, Platform Operations

Kristian Downs has been promoted to Executive Director, Platform Operations at Secretly Distribution, the company confirmed on 28 July 2026. In the new role, Downs reports to COO and Partner Chris Welz and retains oversight of the distributor's Digital Operations team, a group he has led since joining the company in 2020. The promotion broadens Downs' remit to include strategic ownership, governance, and long-term operational direction across Secretly Distribution's core platform infrastructure — the systems that manage how music catalogues, metadata, and deliveries to streaming services actually function behind the scenes.

At the centre of that infrastructure is RIOT, Secretly Distribution's bespoke repertoire management system, the software the company uses to track and administer the recordings and releases it distributes. Downs helped build RIOT alongside Babel Ops, a development partner that Secretly Distribution later acquired in April 2026, according to a Billboard bulletin from that month. Downs will continue to lead RIOT's development with the Babel Ops team in his new position.

Welz, who was named a Partner at Secretly Distribution in February following what the company described as its biggest year ever, credited Downs with transforming the distributor's digital operations since his arrival six years ago. Downs came to Secretly Distribution with senior leadership experience at AWAL/Kobalt — a distributor and publishing administration company that competes in the independent-label space — and at Beggars Group, the British independent-label network whose imprints include XL Recordings and 4AD. He also founded a music services distribution and rights platform for independent artists and labels before moving to Secretly.

The career arc places Downs squarely among the operational figures shaping how independent music reaches listeners. Billboard named him to its U.K. Power Players List for 2026 in May, recognising executives whose work affects the British music industry. Billboard

Secretly Distribution, the distribution arm of the Secretly Group — whose labels include Dead Oceans, Jagjaguwar, and Secretly Canadian — serves artists, management teams, artist estates, and rights-holders who operate without a traditional label infrastructure, according to the company's website. Its Label & Shared Services team handles metadata management, physical manufacturing support, design, media buying, project management, release strategy, and financial administration across catalog maintenance, reissues, and global frontline new releases. In practical terms, that means everything from ensuring a track's title and credits are correctly formatted for Spotify to coordinating vinyl pressings for a reissue campaign.

For the independent artists and labels relying on that pipeline, the person running the platform behind it matters more than most listeners will ever know. Downs now has broader authority over it.
