Ekaterina Alexandrova, the world number 19 and top seed at the inaugural Memphis Classic, collapsed on court and retired from her first-round match against 16-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova as temperatures hit 34°C on July 28, 2026.

The match, scheduled for 4:00 PM local time on the outdoor hard courts of the Leftwich Tennis Centre, lasted three hours and 11 minutes before Alexandrova could not continue. The WTA officially attributed her retirement to heat illness. (WTA)

For Liutova, a fellow Russian, it was her debut match on the WTA tour — the main professional circuit for women's tennis. She trailed 4-2 in the deciding third set before recovering to lead 5-4. Alexandrova retired at 15-30 in that game, two points from defeat. The final scoreline read 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 5-4 ret.

The third set told the story of the match's final act. Alexandrova, 31, had taken the first set in a tiebreak — the shootout used to decide a set locked at 6-6 — before Liutova levelled by taking the second 6-4. When the teenager broke back from 4-2 down in the third, the momentum swung fully her way.

Then the conditions intervened. Alexandrova fell to the ground mid-point and needed immediate medical attention. The match was briefly paused as she tried to continue, and she received a time violation — a warning for exceeding the serve clock — amid her struggles. The Memphis Classic is a WTA 250 event — the entry-level tier of WTA tournaments, below the Premier and mandatory top-tier events — and 2026 is its debut edition. The tournament runs through August 2.

For Alexandrova, the priority now is recovery. For Liutova, the Memphis draw has opened in the most dramatic way possible, and she advances to the second round.
