Ryan Murphy Unveils American Horror Story Season 13: An Avengers-Style Reunion of the Franchise's Past

Ryan Murphy has pulled back the curtain on American Horror Story Season 13, and it is the most ambitious crossover the long-running anthology has ever attempted. Speaking at the premiere of his series The Shards on 29 July 2026, Murphy told Entertainment Tonight that the new season is not a sequel to the fan-favourite "Coven" arc but something bigger — it combines "all the seasons" (Variety).
Murphy likened the concept to a superhero ensemble. "It's like The Avengers," he said, with characters from across the show's history coming "together to defeat the ultimate evil" (Variety). For a franchise that has spent over a dozen seasons resetting its world each year — each season a self-contained story with a new setting, new characters, and a fresh cast — pulling those threads into one narrative is a first.
The cast list reads like a roll call of the show's most recognisable veterans. Sarah Paulson is playing six or seven roles. Jessica Lange is returning to play all four of her iconic AHS characters. Evan Peters is taking on five. Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, and Angela Bassett are all back. Newcomers Paul Anthony Kelly, John Waters, and Joey Pollari round out the ensemble (Variety).
Getting the original cast back was not straightforward. Murphy said many had declined to return over the years but changed their minds after hearing the Season 13 pitch (Variety). Lange, who left the series after its fourth season and returned only briefly since, reportedly told Murphy after the pitch: "Oh shit, now I have to do it" (Variety).
One name is missing from the lineup. Ariana Grande was originally set to appear but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with her "Eternal Sunshine" tour (Variety).
Murphy said he spent "many, many months and many years" writing the season (Variety). The effort spans 13 episodes, and filming has already wrapped, according to an Instagram post from the production on 28 July 2026 (Instagram).
American Horror Story Season 13 premieres on FX and Hulu on 24 September 2026 at 6 p.m. PT (Variety).
For a show that has reinvented itself every year since 2011, a season that gathers its own history into one storyline is a notable swing. Whether it lands for viewers will depend on how thirteen episodes balance a sprawling cast of returning characters against a single story worth telling.
