The decision means the group's work will be absent from the ballot for the 69th ceremony, scheduled to air on February 7, 2027. Music Business Worldwide reported the news.

The statements, translated from Korean, read: "We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year." The members added: "We hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language." Each post concluded: "We thank ARMY and everyone who is always with us."

The announcement arrives six weeks after the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 69th Grammy Awards, announced on June 16. The BTS members did not name the new category — or any category — in their Instagram posts, and their statement made no direct reference to it.

BTS were first nominated for a Grammy in 2021, when "Dynamite" was shortlisted for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. They have received nominations across three ceremonies but have never won. The group's latest album, ARIRANG, was released on March 20 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the album chart that ranks the most consumed releases in the United States. Its lead single, "SWIM," topped the Billboard Hot 100, the weekly ranking of the biggest songs in the country by sales, radio play and streaming.

What gives the decision its weight is the calendar: a category designed in part to recognise acts like BTS was unveiled in June, and the most prominent act it could have honoured has opted out in July. The members' own framing — music heard "for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language" — leaves room for interpretation, but the statement does not specify which Grammys process, policy or outcome prompted the move.

Music Business Worldwide reached out to HYBE, the parent company of BTS's label BIGHIT MUSIC, for comment. The outlet was directed to the artists' official statement published via Instagram.

The Recording Academy has not publicly responded to BTS's decision.
