Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has surpassed $700 million at the global box office after just 12 days in theatres, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2026, per Variety.

The film has earned $320.5 million domestically — the United States and Canada — and $407.4 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $727.9 million, Variety reported on July 29. Three 2026 releases sit ahead of it: Toy Story 5 at $1.02 billion, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $1.001 billion, and Michael at $1.001 billion.

Nolan's most expensive film to date, The Odyssey carried a $250 million production budget. It is also the first feature film shot entirely with Imax cameras — the large-format system known for towering screens and immersive sound. Imax screenings have contributed $140 million of the global total, and the film became Imax's second-fastest title to cross $100 million in Imax sales, reaching the mark in 10 days. Only Avengers: Endgame got there faster.

The numbers arrived on the back of a powerful launch. The Odyssey opened to more than $124 million at the U.S. box office, the best live-action opening weekend of 2026 and a personal best for star Matt Damon as a lead, per Deadline. Audiences gave it an 'A' CinemaScore — the exit-poll grade that studios watch as an early read on word of mouth.

Then it held. A $21 million first Tuesday set a domestic record for Nolan, per Deadline. The second Wednesday added $18.05 million, the director's second-best ever on that day, per Deadline. By the second weekend, the film grossed $90 million in the U.S. — another Nolan record, topping The Dark Knight's second frame, per Deadline. That figure blew past the $61 million–$74 million range Deadline had projected earlier in the week.

What makes the run stand out is the runway still ahead. The Odyssey has not yet opened in China, where it is scheduled to debut on August 14, 2026, across nearly 800 Imax screens. Nolan's previous career highs — The Dark Knight at $1.008 billion and The Dark Knight Rises at $1.08 billion — are both within striking distance if the China release and the coming weeks deliver.

The film stars Matt Damon and Tom Holland in an adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic. Universal Pictures, which released the film, held its premiere in Mumbai on July 11, 2026, before the global rollout began, per Forbes.

One complication sits on the calendar. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens this Friday and is expected to deliver one of the biggest openings of all time, per Variety — a direct competitor for screens and audience attention as The Odyssey enters its third week.
