Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, has been released from the intensive care unit after being treated for multiple gunshot wounds sustained at the family's Virginia home late Sunday, according to Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Reid spoke to reporters after Wednesday's training camp workout and said Mia Bieniemy is "making progress." He offered no timetable for Eric Bieniemy's return to the team (The Guardian).

The shooting occurred late Sunday at the Bieniemy family's home in Virginia. Mia Bieniemy, 57, had been hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds and treated in intensive care before her release (The Guardian).

Authorities arrested the Bieniemys' 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling (The Guardian). As of Wednesday, Elijah Bieniemy was being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. He has a court date to hear motions scheduled for Thursday, July 30, and a preliminary hearing set for August 31 at 10 a.m. (The Guardian).

Eric Bieniemy is in his second stint as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator, a role he first held from 2018 through 2022 before returning to the staff. He and Mia have two sons, Eric III and Elijah (Chiefs.com).

Reid's update, brief and measured, confirmed that Mia Bieniemy's condition has improved enough to leave intensive care. But the coach made clear that Eric Bieniemy's absence from camp has no defined end date, leaving the Chiefs' offensive staff to carry on without their coordinator as training camp gets underway.

The Chiefs opened training camp this week with the franchise chasing a return to the Super Bowl after last season's playoff run. For now, the football side of that pursuit waits.
