Will Rhodes played the innings of his life and Durham needed every single run of it. Chasing Glamorgan's 326 for 6 in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at South Northumberland Cricket Club in Gosforth, Durham slumped to 97 for 6 — then watched Rhodes construct a rescue of 148 not out, a career-best List A score, to drag his side over the line by three wickets with three balls to spare (BBC Sport).

The trouble arrived early and arrived twice in successive deliveries. Dan Douthwaite, who had earlier clubbed an unbeaten 45 in Glamorgan's innings, dismissed Emilio Gay and then Ben Stokes — the England all-rounder out for a golden duck, first ball, without troubling the scorers. Stokes had been in rampant form earlier in the competition, with an unbeaten 108 and a 73 to his name, so the sight of him walking back to the pavilion before he had faced a single scoring shot was a genuine jolt.

At 97 for 6, Durham needed 230 more to win with only four wickets in hand. In 50-over cricket, that is the kind of arithmetic that usually ends one way.

Rhodes had other ideas. He found an ally in Kasey Aldridge and together they put on 145 — a stand that absorbed pressure, rebuilt the chase over by over, and slowly turned a hopeless position into a winnable one. Aldridge's contribution gave Rhodes the platform to accelerate, and accelerate he did, finishing unbeaten on 148. Durham reached 328 for 7, winning with three balls to spare.

Rhodes had already made his mark with the ball, too, taking 2 for 31 in Glamorgan's innings. His was a proper all-round match-winning performance — runs, wickets, and the composure to bat through when everything was falling apart around him.

Glamorgan's total had been built on half-centuries from Eddie Byrom (76) and Zain ul Hassan (65), with useful lower-order contributions of 45 each from Callum Nicholls and Douthwaite. It was a competitive score on any ground. At Gosforth, chasing 327 with the top six back in the hutch, it should have been enough.

The victory lifted Durham to third in One-Day Cup Group B, level on points with Yorkshire and Middlesex (BBC Sport). Yorkshire kept pace with a comfortable six-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids at Clifton Park, where Will Luxton's career-best 126 took him to the top of the competition's run-scoring charts with 331 runs. Worcestershire had posted 230 on the back of fifties from Dan Lategan (67), Henry Cullen (70), and Matt Waite (53), but Yorkshire chased it down with 56 balls to spare.

Sussex also won on the day, making it a good round of results for the chasing pack in Group B.

For Durham, the story is Rhodes. A man who walked to the crease with the innings in tatters and his most celebrated teammate already back in the dressing room, and simply refused to leave.
