Japan's Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake: What Happened and Why Recovery Is So Difficult

At least 23 people are confirmed dead and 62 injured after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto prefecture on Japan's Kyushu island on July 28, 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which officially named the event the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake, recorded the main shock at 16:27 JST on July 28. The US Geological Survey measured the event slightly lower, at magnitude 6.8.
