The Solar Energy Association of New Zealand (SEANZ) is calling for urgent investment in solar installation training, warning that the current workforce cannot keep pace with projected demand if political parties follow through on proposed rooftop solar subsidies.

SEANZ spokesperson Gareth Williams told RNZ the industry projects a 250 percent increase in solar uptake over the next five years. That figure draws on Australia's experience but is adjusted for less-aggressive subsidies in Aotearoa. The association estimates between 1,500 and 1,800 solar installers currently work in New Zealand, about a quarter of whom are qualified electricians. To meet projected demand, SEANZ calculates roughly 2,500 additional installers would be needed — a mix of electricians and mechanical installers (the workers who handle the physical mounting of panels rather than the electrical wiring). That figure excludes administrative, sales, design, and project management staff.

The training pipeline is already a constraint. Brad Lynch, owner of New Plymouth-based Solar One, told RNZ every new staff member he hires is already a qualified electrician but still takes about six months to get up to speed with solar-specific installation. Solar One has operated for seven years, growing from three to four staff to seven in the past year, and was hiring again at the time of the report. Lynch also reported a 300 percent spike in solar inquiries overnight when the Middle East conflict began, showing how quickly consumer demand can shift in response to global events.

Williams pointed to Australia as a cautionary precedent, citing quality problems that emerged at the start of its solar surge roughly 15 years ago. Ensuring quality installs would be critical if New Zealand scaled up rapidly, he said. Master Electricians chief executive Alexandra Vranyac-Wheeler told RNZ in a statement that upskilling existing electricians should be the primary focus for meeting near-term demand, rather than relying on new apprenticeships alone.

The Ministry for Regulation has recommended streamlining the regulatory process for installing solar, RNZ reported. The political context is sharpening: ahead of the 2023 election, multiple parties announced policies to boost rooftop solar uptake, though the RNZ article did not name specific parties. With the 2026 election approaching, both the National Party and the Labour Party have promised long-term, low-interest loans to help households install rooftop solar, as The Spinoff reported on 9 July 2026. National's Instagram account has posted that Labour announced a $3,000 subsidy as part of a major solar package. No national residential solar subsidy currently exists in New Zealand; the policies under discussion are election proposals, not active programmes, according to Lightforce Solar's "Solar Election 2026" page. Solar Scout reported it could not find a current 2026 rooftop solar policy on the Green Party, NZ First, or Te Pāti Māori websites at the time of its reporting on 19 July.

The workforce numbers frame the challenge starkly. If uptake rises as SEANZ projects, the current installer base would need to more than double. The lead time to train even qualified electricians into competent solar installers — six months, per Lynch — means any subsidy programme would need to account for lagging supply capacity. The SEANZ projection of 2,500 additional installers also covers only hands-on installation roles. Sales, design, project management, and administrative functions would add further staffing pressure on top of that figure.

The broader context here is that the Australian precedent Williams referenced deserves particular attention from policymakers. Australia's early solar boom produced quality and safety failures traced back to installers who were insufficiently trained and operating under aggressive subsidy timelines. New Zealand's installer base is a fraction of Australia's, and the training pathway depends on electricians who already hold a qualification but still require months of solar-specific experience before reaching full productivity.

The split between electricians and mechanical installers within the existing workforce also matters for any training response. SEANZ's estimate that only about a quarter of current installers are electricians means the non-electrician majority falls outside Master Electricians' recommended upskilling pathway. A training strategy built solely on upskilling existing electricians would not address the bulk of the workforce. Whether a parallel pathway for mechanical installers forms part of the policy response has not yet been articulated by either major party.

RNZ's reporting drew on direct interviews with Lynch and Williams, and a statement from Master Electricians. No press release was attributed as the origin of the story.
