Netflix Signs Reality TV Veteran Mike Darnell in Multi-Year Overall Deal

Netflix has signed Mike Darnell to an exclusive, multi-year overall deal — meaning he will create and produce projects exclusively for the platform — to provide what the company calls "strategic creative guidance" across its entire unscripted slate (Deadline, 30 July 2026).
Darnell will also develop and produce his own projects at Netflix, spanning competition series, dating shows, and reality ensemble projects. The deal came together after several months of conversations with Brandon Riegg, Netflix's Vice President of Nonfiction Series & Sports, who oversees all unscripted programming at the platform.
For anyone who has watched reality television in the last three decades, Darnell's name is already familiar. He spent nearly 20 years at Fox, starting in 1994 as director of specials and rising to President of Alternative Entertainment. During that time he was behind some of the most widely watched unscripted shows on television: American Idol, MasterChef, So You Think You Can Dance, Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, Temptation Island, Joe Millionaire, The Simple Life, and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? American Idol, which ran for 15 seasons on Fox starting in 2002, was arguably his biggest hit. When Darnell left Fox in 2013, Rupert Murdoch called him "a pioneering force in shaping the reality programming genre."
He joined Warner Bros. later that same year as President of Unscripted Television, a role he held for a decade before departing in July 2023 (The Hollywood Reporter, 13 July 2023). At Warner Bros., Darnell oversaw The Voice and The Bachelor franchise, along with Ellen's Game of Games, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Friends: The Reunion. Three Gordon Ramsay shows originally developed under Darnell at Fox — Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, and MasterChef — are all still on the air.
The Netflix signing comes shortly after a shift in the platform's unscripted leadership. Jeff Gaspin left his role as VP of Unscripted Series at Netflix in June 2026. Netflix's current unscripted slate includes big-ticket competition formats such as The Golden Ticket, a Willy Wonka-themed series, and an adaptation of the board game Monopoly. Temptation Island, a show Darnell originally developed at Fox, is now on Netflix and was heading into its third season as of May 2026.
What makes this deal worth watching is the sheer breadth of Darnell's track record. He has shepherded competition series, dating formats, and ensemble reality projects across two of the largest broadcast networks in the United States — exactly the categories Netflix is now investing in. For viewers, that could mean a new wave of unscripted programming shaped by someone who has spent three decades deciding what lands on screen.
Darnell is represented by UTA.
