John Leguizamo in Talks to Join Matt Damon in Daniels' Untitled Universal Film

John Leguizamo is in negotiations to join Matt Damon in the untitled new film from Daniels — the filmmaking duo of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — at Universal, according to an exclusive report from Deadline.

Leguizamo's path to the project runs through another Universal title. His performance in The Odyssey convinced Daniels to offer him what Deadline describes as the last major role in the film. The actor has been busy on the studio lot — he recently wrapped Universal's upcoming Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson, and he can be seen next in Bullet Catch.

The cast is already taking shape. Sandra Oh, Sean Kaufman, Michael Gandolfini, and Charles Melton are all set to appear alongside Damon. Kwan and Scheinert are writing and directing, producing through their company Playgrounds alongside Jonathan Wang. Playgrounds operates under an overall deal with Universal — meaning the studio funds and distributes the company's projects in exchange for first access to them. Kwan and Wang also recently produced The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist, released in March through Universal's specialty division, Focus Features.

On the studio side, Executive VP Production Development Sara Scott and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for Universal. Universal had no comment on the Leguizamo casting when approached by Deadline.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting later in 2026. No plot details have been disclosed, and no release date has been announced. Leguizamo is represented by UTA, Mosaic, and Jackoway Austen Terman.
