The Wizard of Oz at Sphere Crosses $400 Million, and James Dolan Says It Could Run a Decade

The Wizard of Oz at Sphere in Las Vegas has grossed more than $400 million and sold over 3 million tickets, and Sphere executive chairman James Dolan says the show could run for ten years. Dolan made the remarks during Sphere's Q2 2026 earnings call on 30 July 2026, covered by Deadline. Deadline

The immersive production opened on 28 August 2025, retooled from the 1939 film by a team from Google DeepMind and other specialists. Roughly 25 minutes of the original running time and some musical numbers were cut to fit the venue's enormous wraparound screen. Tickets start at $104 per seat. Drone-operated monkeys fly through the auditorium as part of the show. Reuters

The numbers climbed fast. By early September 2025, the production was grossing $2 million per day, according to Bloomberg. By June 2026, it had crossed the $400 million mark. The Q2 2026 earnings report showed 220 performances in the quarter, up from 215 in the same period a year earlier. Bloomberg

A "2.0" version with modifications and additions is set to premiere in September 2026. Dolan estimated that the original Wizard of Oz project took about two years to complete. Sphere has also announced a new version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, slated for March 2027, which Dolan said will require about one year of work. Deadline

The venue itself is expanding. Two new Sphere locations are projected to open within four years: a full-sized venue in Abu Dhabi and a smaller-scale one near Washington, DC. Sphere Studios is also producing an original experience called "From The Edge," set to debut in 2026. Deadline

Dolan and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav both appear as characters inside the Wizard of Oz experience, Dolan revealed at the premiere. The production is part of The Sphere Experience, the venue's signature content category, which bundles a feature-length immersive film with other live and pre-recorded segments. For a single-screen venue in the Nevada desert, a ten-year run would put The Wizard of Oz in the company of the longest-running theatrical engagements in Las Vegas history. Dolan's projection rests on the sustained pace of ticket sales, not a new deal or a fresh investment round. The earnings call is where he said it, and the figures he cited are the figures on the page.
