Outfest came back this month after a two-year absence, and the queues said yes. The rebranded OutfestNEXT ran for four days, July 23–26, 2026, at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Renberg Theatre in Hollywood — a 183-seat room that was sold out or on standby for most screenings. The programme carried over 30 films and shorts across twenty screenings, headlined by Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex, Brydie O'Connor's Barbara Forever, and Alexandria Stapleton's The Brittney Griner Story Variety.

That is a long way from the festival's traditional 11-day summer run. The contraction follows a collapse that interim executive director Christopher Racster calls a "perfect storm": the SAG-AFTRA strikes that began in July 2023, a corporate retreat of sponsorship dollars in the wake of the Dylan Mulvaney Bud Light controversy, and management problems inside Outfest itself. The organisation weathered a legal battle with a former executive director and the unionisation of its workforce, which culminated in mass layoffs Variety.

Racster, who ran Outfest from 2011 to 2019, returned as interim executive director in mid-2026 and is now the organisation's only full-time staff member. He brought back roughly two-thirds of the people he originally hired during his earlier tenure. A new board of directors was seated in September 2025, led by president Lucas Bailey — an attorney who joined Outfest in January 2024 with prior stints at NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Netflix Variety.

The festival's homepage greeted visitors with a blunt heading: "PRESS RELEASE — We're Back!" Outfest. OutfestNEXT first reappeared in November 2025 as a test edition before this summer's four-day run Outfest. Screenings used both the Renberg Theatre and the smaller Micro Cinema, both housed at the LGBT Center's Village at Ed Gould Plaza Outfest.

Audience demand outpaced the room. In April 2026, a standalone Outfest screening of Bookends — written by and starring Noam Ash alongside F. Murray Abraham and Charlie Barnett — sold out within hours. Ash joined the festival's host committee to help spread the word Variety.

The festival also reached beyond its own venue. Outfest's "Emerging Voices" programme appeared as part of the City of West Hollywood's free 2026 WeHo Pride Arts Festival WeHo Pride.

Racster's tagline for the edition is "Our Stories Create Change" Outfest. He would like to run OutfestNEXT twice a year going forward Variety.

What stands out is the gap between the ambition and the scaffolding. One full-time employee, a borrowed 183-seat theatre, and a programme that kept filling it. The festival that once spanned eleven days now fits into four, but the demand — at least for this edition — was not the problem.
