Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, now playing in theatres — a casting Marvel kept hidden through every trailer, poster, and press interview until the film's premiere. The role makes Sink the third actor to portray Jean Grey on screen, following Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner in the earlier X-Men film cycles. Variety confirmed the casting on 31 July 2026.

Marvel's secrecy campaign held all the way through to the premiere. Forbes reported on 28 July 2026 that Sink's role was spoiled at the premiere itself, with musician Steve Lacy involved in the reveal. Forbes had the story on 29 July; an Instagram post from Lacy surfaced the following day. Until that point, no marketing material had named her character.

The film guards Sink's involvement on screen, too. Her face as Jean Grey is not revealed until roughly halfway through the running time. When she does appear, Jean Grey is on a mission: she attempts to break into the Department of Damage Control headquarters to retrieve something locked in a vault. The film depicts Damage Control — the government agency that cleans up superhero fallout in the Marvel universe — as a villainous organisation that held Jean hostage and ran tests on her.

A flashback explains why. Jean had an older sister named Sara, who could also possess minds. Sara was abducted by Damage Control and died while being tested on. The vendetta drives Jean through the film.

Her powers are formidable. Jean possesses Scorpion (Michael Mando) and later Bruce Banner, the Hulk, played by Mark Ruffalo — turning the green giant into a weapon she controls. Spider-Man (Tom Holland) teams up with Jon Bernthal's Punisher to stop the rampaging Hulk. The partnership is uneasy: when the Punisher fires a sniper round at Jean Grey, Spider-Man pushes her out of the way and takes the bullet himself.

The climax is grand in scale. Jean creates a psychic bubble that freezes nearly everyone in New York City in place. Spider-Man is the only person able to resist her powers, and he reasons with her to drop her vendetta. Jean uses her abilities to keep Spider-Man alive after he is shot — then leaves before he can say goodbye. She is tranquilized and apprehended earlier in the film by Damage Control CEO Bill Metzger, played by Tramell Tillman, but the final moments show her riding a bus out of New York City.

What makes this stand out is what the film leaves out. There are no references to the X-Men or other mutants anywhere in Brand New Day. Jean Grey arrives without a team, without a school, and without the mythology audiences associate with the character. She is simply a young woman with terrifying power and a personal grudge.

For fans, this is Marvel testing whether a major mutant character can walk into the Spider-Man corner of the universe on her own — no Professor Xavier, no mansion, no codename spoken aloud. The bus ticket out of the city suggests she will be back.
