The Rockets posted 139-7 from their 100 balls — The Hundred being the format where each side faces 100 deliveries, bowled in sets of five. Sunrisers Leeds finished on 134-5, close but not close enough.

Sophia Dunkley set the platform for the Rockets with 56 off 33 balls, cracking nine fours before Annabel Sutherland bowled her. Dunkley had scored 57 against Manchester Super Giants the previous Friday, making this her second consecutive fifty. Bess Heath then hit three fours in the final set of five balls, nudging the total beyond what looked chaseable.

It nearly was not enough. Hannah Baker sparked a middle-order collapse that saw the Rockets slump from 105-2 to 118-6, finishing with two wickets. Sutherland, the Australian all-rounder, took 2-20 with the ball and then nearly won the match with the bat.

Needing 55 off the final 20 deliveries, Sutherland tore into Georgia Elwiss, taking 23 runs from one set of five — including two full tosses dispatched for six. She finished unbeaten on 59 from 30 balls, reaching her half-century by hitting the last ball of the innings for six. Her partnership with Lauren Winfield-Hill was worth 50 off just 27 deliveries.

The chase died with three balls remaining. Winfield-Hill was run out when Leeds needed 17 from five, ending the rally. Jess Jonassen's 2-20 for the Rockets proved just as valuable as Sutherland's efforts at the other end.

For Leeds, a second-half revival under head coach Daniel Vettori — appointed ahead of the 2026 edition (BBC Sport) — still feels distant. The franchise, in their new orange-and-black strips this season (BBC Sport), have talent across the sheet. Sutherland alone showed how thin the margin was between defeat and something quite different.

What makes this match stand out is the sheer symmetry of Sutherland's afternoon. Two wickets for 20, fifty-nine runs at a strike rate of nearly two per ball — and still on the losing side. Cricket rarely hands a player a more complete performance with a more frustrating result.
