Leicestershire hammered Somerset by 164 runs at Uptonsteel Grace Road to climb to the summit of Group A in the BBC One-Day Cup, a result the club described as "thumping" and one that keeps their knockout hopes firmly alive (Leicestershire CCC).

The home side posted 289-8 from their 50 overs, with Ben Cox top-scoring on 89, Ian Holland contributing 77 and Nick Kelly adding 60. Somerset never settled in reply. They folded to 125 all out inside 30 overs, Alex Green doing the bulk of the damage with 3-28. Leicestershire moved to 16 points in a tight group where, under the revamped white-ball structure, the top two in each group plus the best two third-placed teams reach the quarter-finals (BBC Sport; Leicestershire CCC).

Elsewhere, Northants piled up their highest total of the campaign — 347-6 in 50 overs against Lancashire. Opener Gus Miller crunched his first century in the format, 115, with Aadi Sharma (61) and captain Nathan McSweeney (78 off 59 balls) piling on the runs. Lancashire were bowled out for 280 in the 46th over despite Joe Moores thrashing 85 off 59 and Marcus Harris grinding out 57. Yuzvendra Chahal, the Indian leg-spinner, claimed four wickets for Northants. The margin was 67 runs.

Kent chased down 293 to beat Notts by five wickets with four balls to spare at Beckenham. Notts had been carried to 293-9 by opener Ben Martindale's maiden List-A hundred (101), with Kyle Verreynne adding 71. Ekansh Singh's 4-40 gave Kent a foothold. In reply, Harry Finch's 88 and Sam Northeast's 78 set the platform before Chris Benjamin finished things off with an unbeaten 55 off 34 balls — barely more than half an over per boundary in the closing stretch.

Warwickshire made light work of Gloucestershire at Rugby School, winning by six wickets with eight overs to spare. Ollie Price's career-best 122 had taken the visitors to 271-9. But Bears captain Rob Yates was in a different mood entirely, smashing a List-A best of 132 off 123 balls — six sixes included — and Vansh Jani saw it home unbeaten on 66.

The women's Metro Bank One-Day Cup was also in action. Middlesex Women edged Sussex Sharks Women by two wickets in a League 2 fixture at Hove. The result leaves the group table finely poised, with Yorkshire's men sitting atop Group B on four wins from five heading into their own fixture.

For Leicestershire, the manner of the win matters as much as the margin. A side scrapping for a quarter-final spot does not often get to win by 164 runs. The batting depth — three players past fifty — and a bowling unit that ripped through Somerset in half their allotted overs send a message to the rest of Group A. The knockout places are still up for grabs, and Grace Road just got louder.
