London Broncos beat Widnes Vikings on Sunday, 3 August 2026 to complete a 20-from-20 Championship season. Twenty wins, zero defeats. And it still might not get them promoted.

The Broncos were saved from going out of business by Australian rugby league great Darren Lockyer and his business partner Grant Wechsel, who completed their takeover at the back end of 2025. When they arrived, the club had three members of staff. Since then, the pair have poured millions of pounds into reviving a side that has existed in various guises — Fulham, London Crusaders, Harlequins, and the Broncos — for nearly 40 years. Richard Branson bankrolled the club during its 1990s heyday; now it is an Australian NRL Hall of Famer writing the cheques.

The goal is straightforward: return the Broncos to Super League, the English top flight, and compete there. The obstacle is structural. Rugby league promotion in England is no longer decided by results alone. Each October, the highest-ranked 14 clubs in a grading system devised by IMG — the sports management company brought in to overhaul the professional game — gain access to Super League. Clubs are scored on a range of metrics, many of them off-field: stadium, finances, fan engagement, community reach. Win every match and you can still fall short if the spreadsheet says your business is not ready.

The Rugby Football League's most recent grading round, published in October 2025, awarded A grades to seven clubs and B grades to a further 17. Super League itself is set to expand to 14 teams under the IMG framework. So there are more seats at the table than before — but the Broncos need to prove they belong in one of them by October.

What gives the club leverage is the broader picture. Peter V'Landys, the interim NRL CEO, has publicly said he is turning his attention to Super League and wants London Broncos in the competition. People close to the NRL told The Guardian that if the NRL takes control of Super League, London will be included, because the capital matters to the NRL's global expansion plans. Wechsel has also aired hopes of a Super League-NRL partnership, and the Broncos formally declared their support for proposed NRL investment in Super League back in April 2026.

For a club that nearly died, the ambition is startling. The 2026 Championship campaign runs 26 rounds from January through August, and the Broncos have come through 20 of their matches with a perfect record. The question is whether the off-field rebuild — the staffing, the infrastructure, the commercial case — matches what the players are delivering on the pitch.

Lockyer, one of the greatest players Australia has produced, is not lending his name from afar. The club confirmed he will play a key role in shaping its future. Whether that future involves a Super League place via the IMG gradings in October, or arrives through the back door of NRL investment, the Broncos have made sure they will be part of the conversation.

A perfect season. A rescue mission. And a deadline in October that no amount of tries can settle alone.
