Newcastle United have signed Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga for £25.7m, bringing in one of European football's standout young stoppers on a five-year contract.

The 24-year-old flew to Newcastle's training camp in Spain at the weekend to finalise the move after the club activated his release clause (BBC Sport). The deal, worth around €30 million, was first reported on 31 July by The Athletic and Yahoo Sports, both citing the same figure (The Athletic; Yahoo Sports).

Hornicek is expected to replace Nick Pope as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper (The Sun). Pope, 33, has been Eddie Howe's regular between the posts since arriving from Burnley in 2022.

The Czech international arrives with a European pedigree that turns heads. Last season he kept seven clean sheets during Braga's run to the Europa League semi-finals, the most of any goalkeeper in the competition. For a side that was not among the pre-tournament favourites, that is a serious statement.

His strengths extend well beyond shot-stopping. Opta data showed Hornicek ranked second for successful passes (846) and fourth for passing accuracy (75%) among goalkeepers in Portugal's top flight last season (BBC Sport). In a modern game where goalkeepers are asked to start attacks as much as prevent goals, those numbers matter — a keeper who can pick out a team-mate under pressure is worth goals at both ends of the pitch.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson said Hornicek's progress in recent years has been remarkable and that he has established himself as one of Europe's top young goalkeepers (BBC Sport).

Hornicek is not the only fresh face at the club this summer. Newcastle have also brought in 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from French side Reims (BBC Sport), adding youthful depth alongside their marquee arrival between the sticks.

For Newcastle fans, the Hornicek signing fills a position that has felt uncertain for a while. Pope has been reliable but has also missed chunks of two seasons through injury, and the backup options have rarely inspired confidence. A 24-year-old with European semi-final experience and the passing range of a midfielder offers something different entirely.

The Premier League season kicks off later this month. Hornicek will have little time to settle before the fixtures start coming thick and fast.
