H5N1 Bird Flu Reaches Two Australian States as Mass Wild Bird Deaths Confirmed

Mass bird deaths detected through aerial surveillance in Victoria point to a suspected spread of H5N1 avian influenza across southern Australia, while CSIRO scientists have confirmed the country's first mass mortality event from the virus at Baudin Rocks, off South Australia's coast. Victoria's chief veterinary officer, Dr Graeme Cooke, said the observations matched the patterns recently reported in South Australia, with surveillance near Portland and Nelson showing a clear rise in dead terns along that stretch of coastline. Cooke noted that Victoria's first H5 detections the previous week were individual cases, and that the disease is now spreading with wider effects.
