IMAX announced Monday that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will expand into select digital IMAX locations across North America beginning Thursday, August 6, following the conclusion of The Odyssey's exclusive three-weekend IMAX run. The two films will now play alongside each other on the premium large-format circuit, with The Odyssey continuing on the global IMAX network. (The Verge)

The IMAX expansion arrives during a record-setting stretch for the format and for the broader box office. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $355 million following its July 31 release, making it the second-biggest box office debut in North America since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. It also secured $72 million in preview ticket sales, the highest preview collection for any domestic film. (CNBC)

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, has been the engine of IMAX's summer. The film pulled in $51 million over a weekend weeks after its premiere, with IMAX screens delivering $22.1 million of that total, or 43% of the weekend gross. That brought the film's running IMAX total to $121 million. The Odyssey has generated $221 million at the global IMAX box office to date. IMAX states the film is the only title to have driven multiple $40 million-plus weekends in its global box office. (Deadline)

July was the highest-grossing month in IMAX company history, with $257 million in box office revenue. The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, Moana, and Minions & Monsters together drove a record-breaking $430 million weekend at the overall domestic box office. (Variety)

The scheduling arrangement between the two titles is worth examining. The Odyssey held exclusive claim to IMAX screens for its first three weekends, a window that allowed Nolan's film to maximize premium-format revenue without competition from another title on the same circuit. That exclusivity window now gives way to a shared-screen arrangement, with Spider-Man gaining access to digital IMAX locations while The Odyssey retains its 70mm film engagements at select theaters. The split effectively segments the IMAX footprint: 70mm film locations continue anchoring The Odyssey, while digital IMAX sites pick up Spider-Man. Think of it as two lanes of the same highway, each carrying a different blockbuster rather than one film occupying the entire road.

The economics behind this segmentation are straightforward. IMAX screens command ticket price premiums that can double or triple standard admissions, and a blockbuster title can generate a disproportionate share of its total gross from a small number of premium screens. The Odyssey's 43% weekend share from IMAX screens alone illustrates the leverage the format provides. Opening Spider-Man to those same screens, even partially, gives Sony access to a revenue tier that went largely untapped during the exclusivity window.

The broader context here is that IMAX has moved well beyond its origins as a niche exhibition format bolted onto a standard theatrical run. With $257 million in a single month and two films collectively driving hundreds of millions through its screens, the company's infrastructure is functioning as a parallel distribution channel with its own scheduling logic, exclusivity windows, and revenue shares. The decision to run both titles simultaneously rather than extending The Odyssey's lock suggests IMAX sees more aggregate value in diversifying its slate than in continuing to concentrate on a single title, even one performing at The Odyssey's level.

For the exhibition industry, the $430 million combined weekend across five titles is a signal that theatrical demand, at least in the summer of 2026, is absorbing a deeper release slate than has been typical in recent years. The question of whether that capacity persists beyond the current block of tentpoles remains open, but the numbers through July indicate that the premium end of the market, IMAX especially, is operating at capacity levels the format has not previously sustained.
