Edin Dzeko will play top-flight football in Germany at the age of 40 after signing a one-year contract extension with Schalke, keeping him at the Veltins-Arena through the 2026-27 season.

Schalke's director of football, Youri Mulder, said conversations over the past few weeks made it clear that Dzeko is still as hungry as ever and can help the team in the Bundesliga. The club confirmed the deal on 3 August, with earlier reports from late July having already signalled that an agreement was close Bulinews.

Dzeko arrived in Gelsenkirchen in January 2026 on a free transfer from Fiorentina, the Italian Serie A club. His task was straightforward: help Schalke climb out of the second tier. Six goals in 11 appearances in Bundesliga 2 — Germany's second division — did plenty to get the job done. Schalke regained promotion, and the man who skippered Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup is now set to lead the line back in the top flight.

That return carries a circular kind of beauty. Dzeko last played in the Bundesliga in 2010-11, turning out for Wolfsburg before Manchester City paid £27 million to take him to the Premier League. Fifteen years on, he is back where the European chapter began.

He has never stopped scoring. Across spells at City, Roma, and Inter Milan, the Bosnian built a career on two things: a clinical finish inside the box and a striker's instinct for being in the right place at the right moment. Now 40, those qualities have not deserted him.

The Bundesliga record books offer a tempting target. Klaus Fichtel, a former Schalke defender, holds the league record as the oldest player to feature in a competitive match — 43 years and 184 days. Claudio Pizarro is the oldest goalscorer, netting for Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund at 40 years and 227 days. Dzeko, who turned 40 in March, could have both marks in sight if he stays fit and productive.
