Scott Taylor is coming home. The former Hull FC prop, who won the Challenge Cup twice with the club, will rejoin the Black and Whites as part of incoming head coach Steve McNamara's coaching team for the 2027 season.

Taylor has signed a two-year deal, making him the first appointment of McNamara's tenure. The move reunites Taylor with the club where he played 178 games across eight seasons, lifting the Challenge Cup in 2016 and 2017 — rugby league's historic knockout competition and the sport's oldest knockout trophy.

He retired from playing three years ago and has since taken his first full-time coaching role as head coach of Goole Vikings, a new Championship club (the second tier of English rugby league). That grounding in running his own programme clearly appealed to McNamara, who is assembling his backroom staff ahead of taking the reins.

Taylor was effusive about the prospect of working under McNamara, describing himself as "incredibly excited" and calling the incoming head coach "a huge factor" in his decision to return to Hull, BBC Sport reports.

The appointment lands at a low ebb for Hull FC. The club sit 13th in the Super League table, the top flight of English rugby league, and are on a run of seven straight defeats under interim head coach Andy Last. McNamara's arrival, with Taylor alongside him, is the first concrete step in a rebuild that supporters will hope lifts the club off the floor.

For fans, the emotional pull is obvious. Taylor is one of their own — not Hull-born, but a player whose best years and biggest wins came in the black and white. He knows what success at the club looks like from the inside, and McNamara is betting that counts for something as Hull try to drag themselves back up the table.

Taylor will see out his work at Goole before linking up with Hull FC ahead of the 2027 campaign.
