Matt King, a retired winger who once collected rubbish and pulled pints before reaching the top of rugby league, has been appointed head coach of the NSW Blues for the 2027 State of Origin series. The NSWRL confirmed the two-year deal on 4 August 2026, with CEO David Trodden naming King as the successor to Laurie Daley, who stepped down after guiding NSW to a series win earlier this year. State of Origin is the annual best-of-three series between New South Wales and Queensland — rugby league's fiercest rivalry and arguably the biggest stage in the Australian game. King knows that stage intimately. In his debut Origin series, he scored a hat-trick in the deciding match at Lang Park in Brisbane to claim the first-ever Brad Fittler Medal, awarded to the Blues' player of the series. His playing CV is anything but conventional. King did not debut in first grade — the top tier of Australian club rugby league — until the age of 23. Before that, he worked as a garbage collector and a barman. He left for England's Super League to join Warrington Wolves in 2008 and returned only briefly to the NRL with the South Sydney Rabbitohs before retiring in 2013. His apprenticeship has spanned the NSW Under-18s and assistant roles with Lebanon under Michael Cheika, the Sydney Roosters under Trent Robinson, and the Blues themselves under both Michael Maguire and Daley.
