He praised the healthcare workers who had treated her and other cancer patients, telling the audience, "Hope has a face," and describing the physicians and nurses who help those living with the disease.

Springsteen also used the moment to criticise the Trump administration's cost-cutting measures, which have targeted medical research funding. "Medical research isn't an idea, it isn't politics, it isn't a line in a budget," he said in the recorded message.

The gala appearance included a musical turn: Springsteen played an acoustic version of "Born to Run" during the video segment.

Scialfa, who married Springsteen in 1991 and has been a vocalist and guitarist in the E Street Band for decades, first spoke publicly about her diagnosis in the 2024 documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. In that film, she described how the treatments had affected her immune system, limiting her ability to tour with the band.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow. Treatments can include chemotherapy, immunotherapy and stem-cell transplants, and while the disease is generally considered treatable, it is not considered curable. Remission means the signs and symptoms of the cancer have diminished or disappeared, though patients typically continue to be monitored.

The announcement closes a chapter that had been partially visible to the public since the documentary aired. Scialfa's reduced touring presence with the E Street Band had prompted concern among fans, though the full details of her condition and treatment had remained private until now.

Springsteen and the E Street Band wrapped up their summer 2026 Land of Hope and Dreams American tour on 30 May with a show in Philadelphia. The tour drew large crowds across the United States and was one of the highest-grossing concert runs of the season.
