Trinity House, the British authority that maintains lighthouses and aids to navigation around England and Wales, announced the names of two new vessels at a reception during Cowes Week — and both carry royal connections that span more than half a century.

The first ship will be called THV Princess Royal, a title held by Princess Anne. The second will be THV Prince Philip, named in memory of the late Duke of Edinburgh, who died in 2021. Princess Anne serves as Admiral of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the Cowes-based yacht club founded in 1815, and is patron of two sailing organizations connected to the event. The naming draws on a deep family tie to the organization. Prince Philip held the position of Master of Trinity House — its ceremonial head — from 1969 until his death, making him the longest-serving Master in the institution's history. Princess Anne was elected Master in 2011, succeeding her father. The new ships will carry the prefix THV, which stands for Trinity House Vessel, and will perform the buoy-tending, wreck-marking, and other maritime safety work that the current fleet handles.
